This month we hosted our first ever Performing Pop camp! Students sang and performed choreography to their favorite pop songs! The camp culminated in a showcase for parents.

Student Needs - Can You Help?
We have two students on very limited income and are looking to obtain a small guitar amp and a guitar case (soft or hard shell). If you happen to have these laying around your house, they would be so grateful to have them. 🧡
New Staff: Baylee and Stephanie
Baylee Retherford and Stephanie Thibeau, Junior Miami University students, will be helping teach group piano classes this year!
Baylee is a flute performance and music education dual major, and is wanting to work in an elementary general music classroom when she graduates MU! Baylee is a woodwind tech for the Lebanon HS marching band this year.
Stephanie is a oboe-playing music education major. She is also hoping to become an elementary general music teacher! She is a woodwind tech for the Hamilton HS marching band this year.
Baylee and Stephanie both have their teaching "temps" from the state, so they are super eager to gain some teaching experience at Wellspring!
Also they are available for woodwind private lessons!

What is the Suzuki Method?
You may have heard or seen posters that say "Music is a universal language." But how do we learn language? Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese violin teacher, set out on a quest to study this very question. He went around the world to observe how kids pick up language, and returned with a major observation: kids simply mimic the sounds around them (as opposed to reading which has to be explicitly taught).
So, if music is a language, then how can we use this principle to help students learn in the most natural way?
The Suzuki Method focuses mainly on listening and ear training (in the beginning). A Suzuki student must constantly listen to the songs they will be learning at home. When they come to the lesson the teacher then shows them how those songs go.
Because note reading is not even in the equation, the beginner can be more careful to observe their tone and technique, which helps develop proper muscle memory. The Suzuki pieces also advance rather fast since there is no note reading, so the student feels like they are accomplished and get more excited about playing their instrument!
At Wellspring we use a mix of the Suzuki approach along with more traditional/European teaching methods depending on the students' needs.
Before you even play it on an instrument, sing through your music. If you don't have a concept of how the piece should go already in your head, it's going to be harder to learn it just by figuring out the sheet music.
